BTAs has joined forces with Bournemouth University and Bournemouth and Poole College for the 2017 awards

The Bournemouth Tourism Awards has joined forces with the local Bournemouth University (BU) and with Bournemouth and Poole College for an exciting partnership for the duration of the 2017 event.

The official launch party of the 2017 BTA’s took place on 21st September 2016 at the newly built, prestigious ‘Fusion building’ located on the Talbot campus, and was created by ROUTEpr, marketing and events working in association with students from both the college and the university.

Hospitality and catering students from Bournemouth and Poole College created the delicious canapes under the guidance of Christophe Baffos, whilst students studying Hospitality and Tourism courses at the university helped with hospitality/catering, car park guidance, registration and set up and breakdown of the event, in association with Dimitrios Buhalis, Anya Chapman, Tim Gale, Crispin Farbrother, and Richard Ward.

As well as helping out at the official launch, Bournemouth University students will participate in mystery shopping and encouraging businesses to enter the awards, as well as helping at the semi-finals and final gala dinner. The hardworking students involved will be presented with a certificate for their assistance and additionally, there will also be a special recognition award for the students who have really made a difference to the overall campaign and the events.

Christophe Baffos, Service Industries Operations Manager and Chef Lecturer at Bournemouth and Poole College says “Our involvement with Bournemouth Tourism Awards is important for our Hospitality and Catering department. It gives our students the opportunity to showcase to local employers, the high level of skills they develop whilst training with us. It keeps The College’s strong links with local businesses; and we also see it as a great platform for promoting our vibrant and ever expanding industry to young people looking for a promising future career.”

Said Jackie Phillipson from the Bournemouth Tourism Awards, “We believe that this is an amazing opportunity for students to gain a first-hand insight into the hospitality and tourism industry here in the heart of Bournemouth – one of the UK’s most popular tourist destination and the location they have chosen to come and study. We want to help provide the undergraduates with a chance to network and make their own contacts as well as gain first hand industry experience, this will also give them all a chance to connect with potential employers throughout the awards.”

Dimitrios Buhalis, Head of Tourism and Hospitality at Bournemouth University adds, “The Bournemouth Tourism Awards is an ideal event for our first year pupils to get involved with and to gain experience in the world of Tourism, Hospitality and Events. The BTA’s are growing every year and we are excited about the involvement Bournemouth University will have. We hope that the students utilise this great opportunity fully and enrich their university experience with the awards.”

Des Simmons from Bournecoast and the BTMB says, “This is a fresh concept for the BTA’s and ROUTEpr are responsible for bringing this together. We are delighted that they are bringing the trade, the academic team at BU and all of the students together. We think it is important for the future tourism and hospitality industry professionals to experience such an important local event, bringing together and celebrating local business professionals and the industry.

Hosting the launch of the BTA’s at BU also provides a superb location for everyone to network in a surrounding that they may have never experienced before as well as to kick and cement further relationships with the university and with the students.”
